The teen dream - Corvette stingray
The Corvette is a iconic car built by Chevrolet ( A GM brand) and now into its 6th generation. The first corvette was designed by Harely Earl (the legend) and was introduced to the market during the 1950s.
The six generations all contained different versions and are commonly referred to as C1 -C6. The C6 generation that is in production does for example include several models including the epic ZR1 which featured the strongets motor ever is in a Corvette.
All Corvettes have fans but none is as beloved as the Corvette Stingray, which is a second generation Corvette and the first Corvette coupe with split rear window and non-functional hood vents. It was produced from 1963 to 1967 and featured independent rear suspension. The 1963 model was the only one with the distinct split window; Chevrolet director of high performance Zora Arkus-Duntov didn’t like the design and removed it from the coming models together with the non-functional hood vents.
Today, the newest Corvette model to come out of Chevrolet is the C6 ZR1, a high performance version of the C6. While Corvettes were originally built in Flint, Michigan and St. Louis, Missouri, but the latest ZR1 version is built in Kentucky (Bowling green) with an engine built in Wixom, Michigan.
The C6 ZR1 has been in production since 2009 and was declared “2009 Best Bang for the Buck” by the duPont Registry. Iit was as an example namned the “2009 performance car” by the motoring show ” Top Gear a title it has proven itself worthy of by completing the nurburgring nordschleife in 7 minutes and 26.4 seconds.
The ZR1 engine produces 638hp (476kW), and 604foot-pounds (819Newton metres) of torque. Known as the LS9, the engine is a modified version of the LS3 and contains a sixth-generation Eaton TVS R2300 roots 4-lobe supercharger with intercooler. The supercharge and its output have been been designed not to change the appearance of the hood.
It is the first Corvette model ever to feature oil injectors that help reduce noise and improve cooling, the system also uses oil squirters tha make sure the pistons and cylinders always are well lubricated. Lubrication is further improved by using a modified version of the dry sump earlier found on the LS7.
The design team that designed the ZR1 did a lot to reduce weight including making a lot of parts out of carbon fibre and making the chassi out of aluminium. The carbon fibre have been specially treated not to be damaged by sunlight. The official curb weight of the car is a mere 1,520kg (3,352lb).
The breakes on the ZR1 needed to be strong to work well with the powerful engine and the theme behind the car therefore decided to use a break system originally designed for Ferrari. The rear brakes are the 14.5in (370mm) carbon ceramic rotors that were originally developed as front rotors for the Ferrari Enzo, while the front brake rotors feature a carbon ceramic design highly similar to the one found in the Ferrari FXX track car but10 mm smaller in diameter. At 60 mph (over 96 km/h), the ZR1 will stop within 96 feet (less than 30 meters).
