Though smaller vehicles are more economical both for manufacturing and use, since less raw material is used, most car buyers do not find small cars attractive. So designers have to consider the customer profile before finalizing the design - for a high end luxury car, price will not be important but for a low end car, cost can be critical.

Though there have been lot of advances in automotive technology over the last few decades, for automotive buyers the purchase decision depends to a large extent on the car design and styling. Though car design is very intricate as it involves integrating thousands of components from different suppliers, car manufacturers spend millions of dollars to ensure that the car design is aesthetically attractive.
The designer may have some training and experience in industrial design or art, so that both the design as well as the functional aspects are considered.
